Location: Remote and in Person in Huntington Park

Reports to: Training Institute Director

Summary: The Training Instructor is responsible for designing, facilitating, and delivering high‑quality, recovery‑oriented trainings for community members, CAPS Academy students, and agency staff. This role supports professional development, certification preparation, and workforce readiness while promoting Project Return Peer Support Network’s mission, values, and culture of recovery.

The Training Instructor utilizes adult learning principles, strong organizational skills, and lived experience to create inclusive, engaging, and supportive learning environments. This position collaborates closely with the Training Coordinator and Training Institute team to ensure fidelity to curriculum standards, student success, and compliance with contractual and certification requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Training Coordinator and Program Manager to plan and deliver in-person, remote, and hybrid trainings for CAPS Academy, agency staff, and community participants.

  • Facilitate core recovery-based curricula, including WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan), CAPS Academy Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist core competencies, and other Training Institute trainings.

  • Travels to the CDCR, CIM in Chino as well as other counties and states for various trainings.

  • Facilitate engaging virtual trainings using Zoom and other online learning platforms, including managing breakout rooms, screen sharing, chat functions, and participant engagement tools.

  • Serve as lead or co-facilitator for scheduled cohorts, including sessions held during evenings and weekends.

  • Complete Train-the-Trainer requirements as assigned.

  • Maintain, update, and organize training materials, Learning Management Portal content, student syllabi, attendance records, homework documentation, and required training data.

  • Complete administrative responsibilities related to training delivery, including attendance tracking, data entry, reporting, scheduling coordination, and timely submission of required documentation.

  • Ensure contractual, training, and certification-related requirements are met and that all records are accurate, current, and compliant.

  • Provide one-on-one support meetings, guidance, and constructive feedback to students and alumni to support successful completion and certification readiness.

  • Assist with cohort orientation, graduation ceremonies, and new employee onboarding activities.

  • Participate consistently and reliably in faculty meetings, supervision sessions, team planning, and collaborative learning activities.

  • Represent PRPSN and the Training Institute at community meetings, conferences, outreach events, and partner engagements.

  • Build and maintain positive, professional relationships with students, trainees, staff, employers, and community partners.

  • Model PRPSN’s mission, recovery values, cultural humility, ethics, and professional conduct in all interactions.

  • Remain informed of relevant legislation, certification standards, and best practices affecting peer support and behavioral health training.

  • Perform related duties as assigned by the Training Institute Director.

  • Demonstrated reliability, including consistent attendance, punctuality, preparedness, and timely completion of responsibilities.

  • Ability to facilitate engaging in-person, remote, and hybrid trainings using adult learning principles.

  • Proficiency in Zoom and virtual training technology to effectively engage diverse learners.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrates empathy, impartiality, and sound judgment when working with peers, students, and partners.

  • Adaptable and collaborative team member who manages conflict constructively.

  • Familiarity with the mission and recovery-oriented approach of Project Return Peer Support Network.

Other Position Qualifications:

  • The position is reserved for an individual with mental health and/or justice involved lived experience

  • Associate or bachelor's degree preferred.

  • Possess a current Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Certification.

o If not, CAPS Academy would train the employee to achieve Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Certification.

• Must have teaching/training experience related to core recovery topics.

• Experience working in the mental health field or other social services. 

  • Ability to travel extensively throughout Los Angeles County and surrounding areas in Southern California. Class C driver’s license and clean driving record. Proof of valid automobile insurance and ability to be insured by Project Return’s liability insurance. Must provide proof of auto liability insurance of a 30,000 / 60,000 policy upon the first day of employment, maintain required coverage amounts and provide ongoing documentation of continuous coverage.

• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.  MS Access and PowerPoint are highly required.
