PRPSN offers its ever-widening circles of empowerment and integration through involvement in our self-help groups and Warm Line, membership in our centers, and independence through employment and advocacy. Current services include:
-
Self-Help Groups – PRPSN's network of more than 100 self-help groups stretches across Los Angeles County to make peer support within easy reach of interested individuals. The groups meet weekly for discussion, friendship and social activities. Our peer support groups, which are the entryway to self-help for many PRPSN members. Groups meet weekly in a variety of locations throughout Los Angeles County, such as nonprofit mental health agencies, county clinics, board and care homes, and community centers/churches. The groups are tailored to bilingual individuals, young adults, and people who have mental illness and substance abuse issues. Current group information is available in the Calendar section of this site.
-
Warm Line – The PRPSN Warm Line is Los Angeles County's first after-hours telephone warm line for people experiencing mental health issues. Using a toll-free number (888-448-9777) it provides bilingual (English and Spanish) between the hours of 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm on weeknights.
-
Community Integration Program – Peer Bridgers in our IMD project reach out to peers one on one in Institutes for Mental Disease (IMD), and in groups throughout other locked facilities, such as Metropolitan State Hospital and Twin Towers.
-
El Centrito de Apoyo operates a Spanish language center, located in Huntington Park, which is a social and educational center that provides members with a chance to grow in wellness, to learn new skills and to reconnect with their abilities.
-
Un Paso Mas provides culturally appropriate mental health and educational services to the diverse, greater Los Angeles communities of Huntington Park, Bell, Bell Gardens, South Gate, Maywood, Vernon and Cudahy.
-
Bill's Corner, named in honor of William H. Compton, Jr., long time Executive Director, innovator and international Mental Health advocate, is a clubhouse where people can relax while playing games, socializing and connecting with each other.
-
Employment - Our program is built on a belief in the value of work in recovery and in the capabilities of people with mental illness. Our staff has recovered from mental health issues. For many of us, we are the starting point for re-entry into the work world within the local mental health system and the community at large. As a component of the Workforce Education and Training (WET) Peer Advocate Training emphasizes on developing and increasing clients' progress toward increased responsibility for their own wellness and recovery. Peer Advocate Training has become a significant resource for well-qualified individuals to staff MHLA-funded programs and those programs transforming to serve clients using a recovery approach.
-
Advocacy - Through personal and systems advocacy, our members are empowered to help themselves and each other. Some of our advocacy work comes through our training. Currently, we offer Wellness Recovery Action Planning, as well as regular in-service training for all our staff and volunteers. We also coordinate training for peer advocates to prepare people for entry-level position in the mental health system.
-
Community Involvement - To help the people we serve be more active in the community, PRPSN offers a range of low-cost camping, concert, sporting event and theater excursions to meet different interests and to encourage its members to explore new hobbies.
-
Training - As another way to empower people with mental illness, PRPSN provides training. It has a new training course for individuals who are interested in working as peer supporters in the mental health field. Other training topics include advanced health care directives, which are documents for expressing choices about treatment when individuals are unable to make decisions; communication skills for self-advocacy; stress management; and recovery.
